The Great Welcome

Artist’s statement about the piece:
“When my mother lay dying this past May, to keep myself awake as I sat up through the night, I decided to paint while I held vigil by her bedside. I wanted to create what I was sensing was taking place in the unseen realm as her time was drawing near. She longed for Heaven and had worshipped and served God her entire life, so instead of sorrow, I was imagining the great gathering of family and friends who had gone on before, readying themselves to welcome her HOME.
She had been unresponsive the last 24 hours, but five minutes before she passed my mother opened her eyes wide with a look of wonder on her face. She was simply beautiful! And then she gave a sigh and was gone.
I do so wish I could have seen what she was seeing, but instead I put onto canvas what I was envisioning in my mind’s eye. Her peaceful, beautiful, and effortless death was a gift to me that I wanted to commemorate forever as a painting.
(Detail: Though the two gathered at the beside are unaware of what is taking place in the unseen realm, the dog is able to witness the great celebration.)”  -Liz Hess
